Signature Themes: Learner

My fourth signature theme is "Learner."

I had to laugh when I read the description.  I'd be willing to bet that the majority of dressage riders are Learners.

We are drawn to learning.  The process, more than the result, is what excites us.  ...as in my favorite dressage saying "it's about journey."  Right?

My first dressage show -- with Starman -- 2002

Learners are energized by the steady and deliberate journey from ignorance to competence.  We love to practice what we've learned, we revel in the confidence of a skill mastered... and then we move on to the next skill.  Right?
First show on Auke -- 2005

Learners engage in adult learning experiences like yoga or piano lessons or graduate classes .... or dressage.  Right?
After a clinic -- with Auke

And, finally, the learner theme does not mean that you seek to become the subject matter expert (FEI rider, World Cup competitor) or that you are striving for a professional credential (although I would love to earn my USDF bronze medal).
First show with Jackson - 2009

I'm not sure how this plays out at work but it sure matches my personal life.  Dressage, yoga, French... all serious addictions.

Show of hands.  How many of you went "me too" as you read this one?

I feel the same way about my horse. I can hardly believe the amazing capacity for learning in horses.

  2. Thinking you're right about the learner / dressage thing. We thrive on challenges too.

Loving the photo progression of your dressage journey. They're all good, but picture of you and Jackson is just lovely. So glad to hear he's cleared to work again! :)

  4. OMG, this is so true! Sent over from Farmer's Life Blog. Yes, I'm a yogi too... actually am certified to teach but not driven to teach...imagine that. LOL. Still I am returning to teaching this month to give it another try because I was asked for the 3rd time by studio owners even though I don't tell them I'm a teacher. It's time to honor the universe's message I guess. Also on my long hobby list: Ballet-to-Ballroom Dancing (done many styles and minored in college), french (only becuase i live in Switzerland now), photography (because I live in, hello, one of the most beautiful countries, i better learn how to use a darn good camera), writing, bike riding (racing in the past), graphic design (photoshop art), cooking also brand new but is definitely higher up on my hobby list than photography or bike riding... the list goes on. sigh. NOw i have to read all your other posts about themes...if you have them! The other thing that always interested me is horses, but aside from riding a handful of times, i don't dare get involved. it would be the end of my other hobbies i think!

    Great post. Great insight!
