We Got Chicks!

Early this morning we drove to the post office in town and picked up our box of chicks.

The box chirped and peeped cheerfully the whole way home.  Once home, we opened the box

and put the chicks in the waiting brooder.

The red heat lamp makes the pictures a bit rosy-tinted but you get the idea.

First, I dipped their beaks in water so they would drink.  They left Indiana Saturday so they were thirsty.  Their water will be fortified with sugar the first few days to help them recover from the stress of travel.

It didn't take them long to find their food.

There are chicks with interesting markings.

There are chubby chicks and tall chicks.

Very, cute happy chicks.  Eggs in six months -- whee!

  5. So cute! And yes, the eggs are the best part. That and I get to feed the hens all the bugs from the garden. Muahahahahah!!!

  6. Phew, just done a blog catch up.
I missed your momentous post about selling Winston. Big decision, but it's got to be the right one. I'm like you, I don't want to have to deal with young horse theatrics any more, and I reckon if I was in your shoes he would have been gone months ago!
Best of luck, I hope he sells quickly and I hope you find a nice replacement easily

  8. Ed and I have this ongoing discussion about chickens. I want them , he doesn't. So far it's a draw-until I retire!

I'm jealous of your chicks :)
