Bats in the Bedroom

Last night when we headed down the hall for bed, it was still 80F outside and humid. We opened the windows in the bedroom and turned up the fan a notch. I don't like sleeping in an air conditioned room; I like the windows wide open so I can feel the breeze and hear the sounds of the night.

August normally has hot days but the days are getting shorter so the cool mountain nights give a feeling of autumn in the mornings and evenings. For the past week, we have had record heat during the day and during the night. We see thunderheads off in the distance but they have yet to bring us any rain; just humidity and no clear cold nights.

I hobbled over to the bed with my throbbing toe and climbed up, sitting outside the sheets, sweating, and waiting for Brett to finish brushing his teeth. I heard the beating of wings and looked up to see a bat frantically flying around the room. It dove beneath the blades of the ceiling fan, just missing my head. I screamed and yanked the sheet over my head. I peeked out, and the bat came through again. Brett spit out his toothpaste and came running into the room, expecting to find a snake based on the continued screams coming from underneath the sheet.

He propped open the French door and grabbed a pillow. Between the pillow being flailed by a naked middle aged man, and a screaming sheet covered lump in the bed, the bat decided to leave.

Now we just have to figure out how in the heck it got into the house!

  1. It's all true except I'm not "middle age" anymore, just old, which makes the imagery even worse!

  3. Ahhhh! That's hilarious and scary all wrapped into one! I can't imagine catching one and squishing it either. Ewwww. But what a funny memory to share. Life. Full of surprises.

  8. Be very careful with any other bats you find inside your house. Bats are a huge carrier of rabies. Only 2% of bats you see outside could be carriers, but that number jumps to almost 90% for any bat you find inside your house. So be very careful when you help them back outside.

  11. the chimney flashing perhaps needs to be checked?

once when i lived in an old old house, i had parakeets and little ones :) One morning, i hadnt put my contacts in yet, and noticed one of the parakeets was on the curtain rod in the bathroom. So I held out my finger, and while walking towards him, kept talking to peewee bird (he looked like he had a gray suit on lol)about what a bad bird he was to escape... and as i got closer, i realized he had a brown fur coat on and was hanging upside down...this is now known in our house as the "time mom tried to get a bat to hang on her finger thinking it was her parakeet"...

ah the screaming im sure could be heard for miles that morning, and first thing before i do anything in the morning now is put in my contacts FIRST...

    lol!
