Swimming With the Fishes

Our last day on the big island of Hawaii dawned cloudy with a threat of rain. But not cold. Of course, not cold. This is Hawaii after all.

We spent the day on a boat that took us out of the quiet bay in the morning and then stopped in a quiet cove. Breakfast was served and then we all tumbled into the water and gawked at the gorgeous fish swimming in the coral reefs below us. The water was a comfortable 77F and crystal clear. Blue fish, yellow, striped, polka dotted, puffy and flat. Big and small. The tail of a shark, even, poking out of the bottom of the reef resting on the sandy bottom.

We tried to snorkel further down the coast but the waves were too large so we went back to the same quiet cove where we had lunch. Brett visited with the fish some more. The breeze had picked up and the skies were dark so I opted to stay on board.

When we were in the water in the morning, gazing at the fish, I felt like we were swimming inside a huge aquarium. Gliding quietly along or just floating brought the fish closer. We both dove along the side of the reef, surfacing and blowing water from our snorkels like dolphins.

It was the perfect way to spend our last day on the island. We picked up some fish (Ono) at the harbor and I'll make that for dinner along with the last papaya. It's been a lovely vacation. A wonderful birthday gift. Thank you, honey. You're the best.
