Margarita Weather

We have been having unseasonably hot weather.  It is causing all sorts of havoc in the garden.  All the cherries on my trees shriveled up and fell -- I didn't up the water in time to save them.  The beets in my garden bolted in a day and when I harvested them all (the kitchen sink was overflowing), most of them had already gone woody and ended up as pecking practice for the chickens.  Out of the entire bed of beets, I only got a jar and a half to pickle.  Very annoying!  And my garlic... it's laying over like it has been hit with a bad case of fatigue and just wants to take a nap.  Maybe it's ready to be harvested?  I'm clueless... its been years since I planted garlic and I remember nothing.

Brett helped me get the rest of the tomatoes transplanted into the garden on Sunday.  He hauled up compost and dug it into the bed.  All I had to do was set up the cages and plop the plants into the ground.  I've got three plants each of three varieties: grape tomatoes, slicing tomatoes and sauce tomatoes.

I spent the rest of the day on the couch with my foot elevated, writing poetry.  I had finished reading the whole "50 Shades of Grey" trilogy already.  They were entertaining, mindless, books -- not great literature but a diverting way to pass the time.  Sunday night we went down the mountain to see "Jitney" by August Wilson performed at the South Coast Repertory.  It was the last play of the season (we have season tickets) and very well done.  Brett said it was his favorite of the season.  For my followers in the Orange County area, I highly recommend the production.

Today, was back to work.  I ran in a million directions all day, from meeting to meeting to meeting.  On the way home, I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few things and grabbed dinner.  I didn't have the energy to cook by the time I got home, but I was hungry.

I picked strawberries from the garden -- they are getting scarce and small but there were enough for two strawberry margaritas.

  2. How long is this crazy weather going to last? Usually the garlic is ready when the scapes have formed (Gary cuts them off when they are about 14 inches long so the energy goes into the bulb). If the bottom leaves are brown, it won't develop anymore.

  3. Sorry about the excessive heat. My radishes have bolted and gone woody as well.

  4. Dinner was just perfect. Ninety degrees on Monday and Tuesday then 49 degrees for this Friday and a chance of rain. I'm beginning to feel like the wilted garlic.

  6. Skip dinner, pass me the margarita and a spoon : ) I forgot that you still had to try to rest your foot at work. Like THAT'S going to happen.
