A Pelican for the Garden

Brett and I have been looking for a pelican to put in the memorial garden I planted (and the gophers destroyed) for my mom.  We looked and looked and looked.  We found lots of egrets, but no pelicans.  A few months ago we were visiting my dad and went up to Cambria; thinking that surely, surely, there would be a pelican in the art colony on the coast between Morro Bay and San Simeon.

We didn't find any pelicans we liked -- just one and it was very cheesy.  But, we did find our friends, Tom and Barb, artists and neighbors from Pleasant Valley who recently relocated to Cambria.  If you remember the pedestrian gate with quail at the front of our property, then you have seen Tom's work.

Tom works in metal and wood.  His art is imaginative, interesting, intriguing... in short, just what we needed.  We asked him to create a pelican and to incorporate a glass of champagne.  My mom wasn't a drinker of wine or beer, but she did love champagne.  Since her death, when our family gathers we always drink champagne -- its a way to include, remember and celebrate her. The photos here were taken before Tom put the champagne glass in the pelican's beak. I'll take more pictures when she is in the garden.

Today, we picked up the pelican.  It's perfect.  Tomorrow, Brett will put it in the garden.

Oh, and Monday Brett gets a new knee.  The surgeon's office called Brett Thursday afternoon and said they had a cancellation; did Brett want the spot for Monday morning.  Absolutely!

Best to Brett on his knee surgery - may all go well and his recovery be as smooth as possible.

  2. I love the pelican! Perfect is right. Glad Brett is getting his knee taken care of...now he will have a chance to use his cane! You are going to be busy for awhile, but it will be good for Brett in the long run. Now he's going to have to take it easy for a few minutes.

  3. I'm having trouble imagining the glass. You'll need to do more pics after it's placed. Best wishes on Monday!

  4. One of my favorite birds and it is beautiful. Your mom would smile. And I love that bucket in the header, I should get one for Faith. Fortunately we don't need to go to the 99 and the 5, we take the 58 to the 14 to the 5 to the 405. Monday we have to be at UCLA at 7:30, so it will be a challenge. It is the evaluation process for a liver transplant, which freaks me out to begin with. A grueling and stressful week we just have to muddle through.

  6. Hi Annette, first time comment. I enjoy reading about the horses and your recipes. I will be making a small version of the potato gallette today :) The family really enjoys it.(I do have a little herb garden with fresh thyme, so I'm all set.)

My mother had her knee replace in 2006. I realize there may be a difference in surgery, recovery etc, but this may be something to think about if you have the same rehab/recovery schedule. My mother had an ice pack/pump device that delivered iced water to the surgery site. Keeping the surgery site cool reduces pain/swelling and encourages healing.

We live in the city and have a large freezer, so I purchased the large bags of ice at the grocery to keep the little cooler topped off. Our refrigerator does not an ice maker, so I couldn't depend upon it to make enough tray ice, even in February.

Since you live out in the country, you may need to think about how the rehab will work ... your health care providers should be able to provide you with details and hints.

Best of luck to you and Brett.
