It would be fun - and interesting for me - to hear from all of you. If you don't blog, or don't want to post on this, pick a question or two to answer in the comments. I'd love to get to know everyone better.
1. What is your earliest, clearest horse memory?
My earliest horse memories revolve around when I discovered horse stables at the end of a street, a couple blocks from my home. I found the stable, and started spending all my free time there, when I was about ten years old. I remember the tall, leggy, black and white horse in a corner stall; the dark palomino stallion with a flaxen mane in a deeply bedded double box stall; a huge black horse (named Blue) that would lunge at you as you walked by his box stall (single, not deeply bedded); and the Shetland pony that I, eventually, was allowed to ride. I remember the pile of clean wood shavings behind the barn; the stacks of sweet smelling alfalfa stacked to the ceiling in the hay barn where I went to escape the heat; and the coke machine with old-fashioned curvey bottles of ice cold coke. It was a large boarding stable, probably 50 horses, and I can remember the layout of the property as well as I remember the house I grew up in.
2. Describe the perfect summer day.
I like to be outdoors, and active, but I don't tolerate the heat well. So, in general, I am not a fan of summer. I do, however, love the days that we escape to lakes high in the Sierras, with our kayaks and a picnic lunch.
3. Are you reading anything right now? Tell me about it!
I'm not reading anything at the moment. We are up at 5:30 to do chores before the sun comes over the mountain ridge. After I get home from work we are back outside until dark doing the evening chores. We typically finish dinner at 8:30 or 9 -- then its a shower and bed. Although I love to read, I really only have time to lose myself in a book on an airplane or on vacation.
4. Do you follow a celebrity (horsey or not) that fascinates you?
Nope. I used to be fascinated by Princess Diana and her sense of style.
5. What is your single largest horse dream or goal?
Goals change over time. I think my largest, current, horse dream is to ride Tex bareback. I'd also like to be able to walk with my horses at liberty, all over the ranch. I used to have a lot of dressage related goals -- I wanted to ride single tempi changes; I wanted to do a musical freestyle. Now, I dream about complete connection. I'd love to have the same connection with Tex that I do with Jackson and Lucy.
6. If you were at Starbucks right now, what would you order?
Grande, two raw sugar, triple shot latte with chocolate and cinnamon powder sprinkled on top.
7. What is your biggest equine pet peeve?
People who think of horses as tractors. -- no regard for their physical well being; just riding them into the ground.
8. With everything going on politically and in the media, do you follow it religiously? Tune it out? Something in between?
I have an hour commute each morning and evening and I listen to NPR while I drive. Other than that, I don't follow the media. I am interested, but also often repelled, by what I hear. Not a Trump fan. I didn't like him as a real estate mogul, reality TV dude, or attention grabbing celebrity. I like him even less now. If that's possible.
9. If you had to show your horse to a song, what would you choose?
The horse would be Lucy. She's an elegant horse... And I love Bach. I think Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (Ode to Joy) captures how I feel when I am riding her; in those moments when we are in perfect harmony and sync.
10. What are you most looking forward to this summer?
Kayaking. A visit from the kids in August. It's hard for me to put "look forward to" and "summer" in the same sentence.
I don't have a blog, so here are a couple of the ten questions:
ReplyDeleteWhat is your earliest, clearest horse memory?
I have a similar memory from my junior high school days of spending EVERY SINGLE FREE MOMENT of my time at my neighborhood horse stables. I took lessons once a week and I also got to know a very old man who owned an old harness racing horse and taught me how to put on the tack and connect the harness and eventually taught me how to drive it!! That was the most interesting experience of my life so far! I cannot fathom to this day how he trusted me, a young girl he barely knew, to take his horse around the track (it was next to the stables) by herself!! I was very sad recently to visit the area and find the stables were closed and a lot of the buildings were already demolished and gone. =(
What is your single largest horse dream or goal?
My dream used to be to own a horse someday and compete in dressage, but nowadays I am looking for that connection also. I still would like to own a horse one day, but the costs here are astronomical. So for now, I try to connect with the club horses. ;)
What an awesome gift that man gave you. I have never driven but it sure looks like fun! That was always Brett's dream -- to have a wagon and a hitch and drive around. I'm sure that horse at your stables is shut down. So sad but I'm so happy you are bringing him treats and showing him that not all people are demanding and aggressive.

My replies:
1. What is your earliest, clearest horse memory?
My sister's friend rode her horse to our house in San Clemente. Instant love affair with horses.
2. Describe the perfect summer day.
Picnic at the beach, with a huge SPF umbrella, a good book, and a comfortable chair.
3. Are you reading anything right now? Tell me about it!
David Cay Johnston's "The Making of Donald Trump". It's taking me forever to read it because every time I read a bit of it, I'm incensed that the Orange Cheeto (or Angry Yam) has gotten away with stuff for so long. Johnston is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, very credible.
4. Do you follow a celebrity (horsey or not) that fascinates you?
I'm keen right now on Elisa Wallace of Wallace Eventing. Not only does she train and ride high-end dressage horses, she also buys and trains Mustangs. She has a great YT channel (Wallace Eventing). Non-horsey person who fascinates me is Rachel Maddow of MSNBC. Love her integrity, thoughtfulness, and laser focus on political issues.
5. What is your single largest horse dream or goal?
Just to have another one. I had a Morgan/Quarter mare from my mid-teens to early 20s. Right now I'm getting my horse fix by volunteering at the Shea Center in San Juan Capistrano. It's a therapeutic riding center.
6. If you were at Starbucks right now, what would you order?
Not worried about calories: a Grande non-fat cappuccino and a choc croissant. Concerned about calories: a Grande Pike.
7. What is your biggest equine pet peeve?
Horses in small stalls.
8. With everything going on politically and in the media, do you follow it religiously? Tune it out? Something in between?
YES, I FOLLOW POLITICS, hourly, especially now.Although today, I did drive to and from work w/o the radio on; I reached my limit earlier today, but here I am, rushing to finish so I can watch Maddow's show at 6 pm.
9. If you had to show your horse to a song, what would you choose?
No clue here. I do love the Brandenburg Concertos
10. What are you most looking forward to this summer?
Successfully navigating getting 20 yo son transferred to college in NYC.
END
"Angry Yam" -- snort; that's a great visual; You work at the Shea Center? We know one of the trainers there -- (if that's what you call them). Her horse, Kalvin, was at our place for about a year while he was rehabbing from an injury. Great horse; great owner. Say hi from me if you see her around. ...and another Bach fan; high five!
DeleteAwesome song choice!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad that you can't fit any reading in. Boo. :(
ReplyDeleteI love your earliest memory and all the details you can recall. I'm gonna have to get me an old coke machine like that!
Thank you for joining in the blog hop :)
Hi - I'm coming back to blogging after a couple of years away. I started a new blog and did the blog hop there. https://www.loneoakfarmqh.com/
ReplyDeleteWhat a great childhood memory of the big barn! I would love to get my hands on an old coke machine!
I couldn't agree more with 5 and 7. I have a low tolerance these days for people who see horses as machinery and disposable. I have found that those who agree with 5 are rare souls in the horse world.
ReplyDeleteI agree that #5 is rare, but I think there is a growing awareness and interest. I'm hopeful for the future. Its a much more difficult and time intensive path; but the rewards are so much higher. Its a path that brings deep and lasting joy. We humans were designed for relationship and so I think connection with horses does speak to us; if we listen.
