California Smoke Out

It seems like every September, sometimes into October, smoke descends onto our ranch.

We wake up in the morning, open the back door and step into the haze.  It looks like fog, but it smells like a campfire.  The smoke stings your eyes and burns your throat.  But unlike a campfire, you can't move away from the smoke.  It's everywhere.

We are not close to the fires burning west of us, in Sonoma and Napa counties.  Those are a good two hours away.

And the the fires to the east of us, towards Lake Tahoe, are about an hour away.  Maybe less.

There are also fires to the north of us.

Normally, when I head down the mountain for work I can see the outline of Sacramento clearly in the distance.  This morning?  It looked like this.

  1. There are fires everywhere or so it seems. And what a treat for me: Donkeys! They still are my most favorite animals, even though I don't know any right now. Stay safe.

  2. We just got through our awful fire season. We couldn’t ride the horses many days because the air quality was so poor. I feel bad for you!

  3. It's so scary. We had a lot of fires here during the summer, but nothing like what CA is going through. I worry for friends and family out there. Stay safe.

  4. I imagine that no matter how many times it happens, this is not the sort of thing you ever get used to. Stay safe!

  5. The world seems on the brink of disaster these days- I read about the floods and devastating hurricanes and then fires. It's horrible.

I'm glad to hear that the fires are nowhere near you.
Sorry to hear about the smoke, though.
I hope it clears up soon!
