After the Christmas gifts were opened, we went off in somewhat separate directions. I headed to the kitchen, Kyle curled up on the couch with his computer, my dad listened to the Christmas music -- and Camille went outside with Brett to chop wood.
They hauled the log splitter into the pasture with their gloves and protective eye-wear (sunglasses). Brett gave Camille some basic instructions and they went to work.
After a while, Brett put Camille in charge. She was in her element.
They split a lot of wood.
Brett is still recovering.
Togetherness!
ReplyDeleteHello,I hopped to you from Lori's blog. Here in New Zealand, we have a log splitter very similar to yours, a few less tonnages, about 27 I think. It sure beats the axe, and we have just finished cutting into rounds, and split, 6 pine trees, about1 ton each, and 2 gums, a little smaller. The heap is wonderful. We also have a chip heater for the hot water, and cut the pieces a bit smaller for that fire box. BUT, I need a small tractor with the loader blade as well, that is a huge bonus. So good to see all the safety gear. And, how do you feel when a person says " MY, you are SO LUCKY to have your own firewood". We have about an acre of firewood trees, and as they get felled, replant with macrocarpa or Lawsoniana. Camille, your gloves look wonderful. I tried Youngstown ones, but they perished on the palm and finger parts. And I had the ones recommended for firewood work. Greetings for the New Year from New Zealand.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the blog, Nancy. We got the wood splitter a few months ago when a huge oak fell on the property. Like you said, it sure beats an axe. Camille borrowed my gloves, made by Heritage. I love them -- I use their riding gloves and their work gloves. They are comfortable and sturdy; last a long time. Happy New Year!
DeleteThanks Annette, I need to add you to my blog list instead of a hop occasionally. New Year's Day here, and guess what, we cut up smaller wood for the chip heater,AND, it was 31.6 Celsius!!
DeleteLooks like fun!
ReplyDeleteWow! That’s quite a splitter you have! I predict lots of cozy fires for 2018! We have a gas fireplace and I miss real wood fires. If I’d had my choice, I’d have gone with real, but new homes almost all have gas since they’re so easy to install. 😭
ReplyDeleteAll the homes in our rural area were built with wood stoves for heating. The newer ones have gas, and some of our neighbors have converted. Like you, I love wood fires but splitting and stacking wood is a lot of work.
DeleteI love chopping wood, and even more, heating with wood! For me, it's an added blessing to know when we're heating our home, all that warmth is already paid for!
